October was a busy month filled with costumes and fashionable events to attend, and the fun only continues with the holidays shifting into gear.
As a fashion designer interested in fitting all women in flattering clothes I was especially drawn to attend a plus size fashion show at Macy's hosted by the world's first plus size supermodel Emme.
Emme was a great hostess and I loved her advice for the audience, and took notes to share with you:
1. Get the clothes that fit you!
2. Don't let your size influence your self esteem!
3. You can wear white after Labor Day!
4. Beautiful bodies should not hide in baggy dark clothes. Instead wear color, tight jeans, rock some fringe and remember...
5. You don't need to be uber-sexy to be noticed!
After the show I asked Emme what her go-to outfit was and she said: "Whenever I travel and need a stylish outfit I love grabbing a pair of black ponte knit pants (ponte is a stretchy knit fabric that I also use for my wrap dresses), a sleeveless chiffon cowl neck top, leather jacket and a pashmina shawl."
"When a girl looks stylish you don't look at her size, you look at her and think: She's fabulous!" -Emme.
Below you can see a slideshow filled with current trends including lots of floral prints (on shoes, jackets, shirts...), suede in different colors, fringe, slouchy booties, metallic colors, fur and animal prints and ponchos.
What's new with my Petra O. Little Black Wrap Dress?
Things have nicely moved along, and I received my first sample dress produced by a local manufacturer. I am so excited to hold it finally in my hands and was very pleased with the way the newly added pocket looked! The next step now is a fashion shoot with a bunch of differently shaped girls, and then I'm off to hit up boutiques and get the word out that the perfect wrap dress from day to night has arrived :) .
In the slideshow below you can see design developer Eloisa Serrano and I working on creating a pocket on a pre-sample dress.
The custom order
I also had the pleasure to design a custom wrap dress for the HR director of Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center Lisa Kirvin for Renaissance's annual Gala and was very happy about the way the dress fit her. It was fun letting her pick the fabrics and see her dancing and feeling good.
In the pictures below you see HR Director Lisa and I posing in our Petra O. wrap dresses, and Lisa giving out a special award.
Pictures from last month's fashion events
Fashion Community Week turned out to be a huge success and I was very pleased to see how diverse the audience was. It felt great being amongst an enthusiastic group of fashion lovers of all sizes and colors.
Fashion Community Week Organizer Shirin Hashem did an outstanding group scouting local designers and models, and I truly enjoyed seeing so many different styles and designers of the runway.
On of my favorite designers was an elderly woman named Crisanta Malig showing at the whose outfits were based off recycled materials such as shower curtains and drapes.
Another interested event I attended was IBM's Fashion & Tech event at the Metreon City View. The show included a lot of LED lights, 3D printed fabrics and the models often moved like robots. It was an entertaining show to say the least.
